Extraction – Other Teeth

If tooth decay has destroyed so much of your tooth that the dentist cannot save it, then you might need to have the tooth removed. This procedure is known as an emergency tooth extraction. In addition to tooth decay, you might need a tooth extraction because of gum disease or bone loss in the area around the tooth, because an emerging wisdom tooth has become impacted (trapped), or for orthodontic reasons.

What can I expect after my wisdom teeth are extracted?
Different people experience different things after an extraction. You may experience soreness in the jaw, mild swelling, or oozing from the socket.

What can I do to promote healing after an extraction?
Following the extraction, you should bite down into gauze or a wet tea bag in order to create pressure and stop any oozing. For 24 hours after the extraction, you should avoid rinsing the site, as this can disrupt soft tissue healing. You should also avoid drinking from a straw or chewing on the affected side. If you are in pain, you can also take an anti-inflammatory such as Advil, unless you are allergic.
