Wisdom Teeth Toronto

The average adult has 32 teeth by age 18: 16 on the maxilla, or upper jaw, and 16 on the mandible, or lower jaw. But the average mouth is made to hold only 28 teeth, which can make it hard to cram all those teeth inside. The four extra teeth are the third molars, also known as wisdom teeth.

Wisdom teeth can become impacted, or trapped, beneath the gums; sometimes they emerge only partially. Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth can cause problems if left untreated. Partially erupted wisdom teeth can create an opening around the tooth that allows bacteria to grow, causing infection, swelling and pain. If an infection is present, it may be necessary to drain the pus and treat the infection with antibiotics before the tooth can be removed.
