Your teeth have a lot of nerve! Teeth have tough enamel on the outside, but inside they have a soft cavity, or pulp chamber, and a root canal that contains a nerve. If the inside of your tooth becomes infected or inflammed — for example, because of an untreated cavity — you might need a root canal.
In order to remove the infection and save the tooth, your dentist must clean out the tooth’s pulp, remove the nerve from the root canal, and fill the pulp with a material that seals the tooth and prevents the infection from getting back in. After the root canal procedure is complete, your dentist must restore the tooth with a crown or filling in order to protect it from breaking in the future.
